Why your website should be responsive

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Responsive Web Design” by now unless you’ve been hiding away. So what is it?

Essentially it’s the practice of using a technology called media queries and percentage based measurements to make a website respond to the device that is being used to view it, whether it’s a desktop PC, a mobile phone, tablet or a smart TV.

Moving past the basics web designers make sure that each screen has the right content on it and presents the material in the best way for that device and for how users on those formats want to interact with it.

So why is it so important now?

Our work involves reviewing clients analytic accounts on a regular basis. Over the past 6 months we’ve seen user rates on mobiles and tablets soar, with the average website getting nearly half of their traffic from mobile users. Would you really want to alienate nearly half of the traffic to your website over the holiday period if you are running an ecommerce store?

Is it just for your visitors?

No thank you.
Responsive web design also plays a large part in your SEO. Google have been behind the responsive design movement for years and recently incorporated a facility to check websites with their recent SEO update. Have a listen to Matt Cutts (he’s the guy in the know over at Google) and his thoughts on the role of a responsive website.

Need we say more?

The conclusion?

With statistics of mobile and tablet use growing, the rise of the smart TV and of course the amount of time people spend tweeting and chatting on Facebook through their shiny phones, having a responsive website is a must. If you are running an ecommerce store having a responsive site can make the difference between when the young lad on the bus wants to buying those new pair of jeans from your website, to a frustrated consumer giving up and going elsewhere.
