Time for chit chat
This blog post is a bit off topic to our normal posts, but as it’s Stress Awareness day we thought we’d break the mould and do our bit to help by talking about what we do as a company to reduce work based stress.
Stress. It has or will affect us all at some point in our lives. We believe that happy employees are the foundation of a good business which is why we work hard to remove as much stress from our day to day working environment / lives as possible.

‘The door is always open’ doesn’t apply to us…there are no doors. We all get stuck in together in the open plan office, including our Founder! We work to create an inclusive and creative working environment where we encourage general office chat so we can share whatever is on our mind. After all a problem shared is a problem halved. If a quiet moment is needed to clear our heads, there are quiet rooms and plenty of outdoor space to take advantage of.
The daily commute can be a grind which can sometimes be stressful (especially when you get stuck in a traffic jam). To try and relieve commuters stress we are setup to allow our staff to work from home. We believe that working from home allows us to make better use of the time when we would normally be driving, whether that’s for chores around the house or dropping the kids off at school. It’s small differences to a working day that can have a big positive effect on our day to day life.
Our core hours are 9-5 however if you need to take the cat to the vet, or visit the mortgage adviser in office hours we believe it shouldn’t be a stressful ordeal to try and organise. That’s why we offer flexitime, so you can do these things in office hours. All we ask is that the hours missed are made up at some point.
We encourage taking breaks. Staring at a computer screen for 8 hours a day isn’t good for our mental or physical health. Humans are not designed to sit and stare for long periods of time, it’s bad for our backs and our eyes, nevermind our mental health. Getting up and popping outside for a walk or challenging your office neighbour to a game of ping pong is actively encouraged. There is lots of research out there that suggests taking a break increases productivity and creativity, so it seems like a no brainer to encourage our staff to do this.
Benji is his name and giving cuddles is his game. Benji is on hand for all office emergencies and will sit happily at your side when you’re having ‘one of those days’. It is widely reported that petting an animal can control blood pressure better than drugs. We didn’t really need a reason to enjoy Benji’s company but knowing this is the cherry on the cake!
Sometimes we have bad days. It’s a fact of life. We can’t expect every day to run perfectly to plan, but trying to keep positive and help out our colleagues where needed can do wonders. If one of our team is having a bad day they only need to ask for help. As the late, great Albus Dumbledore said “Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it.” Unfortunately we’re not at Hogwarts, but we do follow the same belief.
